The OpenAI Equity Lottery: What $6.6 Billion Taught Us About the Real Value of an AI Job
The lottery ticket, it turned out, was real. Last October, more than 600 current and former OpenAI employees sold shares worth $6.6 billion in a single tender offer, according to people familiar with the transaction. Seventy-five of them maxed out at the newly tripled cap of $30 million each, capturing over a third of the total pot. Greg Brockman, the company's co-founder and president, disclosed in May 2026 court testimony that his stake is worth roughly $30 billion. He invested zero dollars of his own money; the equity was granted for his contributions.
These numbers are extraordinary. But the more durable story is what happens when 600 multimillionaires scatter across the economy carrying a set of assumptions about what AI is and what it should do.
The scale of OpenAI's employee wealth creation has no precedent in modern tech history. When Google went public in 2004, early employees cashed out. When Facebook hit the market, they did too. But most tech IPOs require workers to wait years, and the bubble often bursts before ordinary employees can sell. OpenAI has been private for roughly seven years, and the shares issued at the start have appreciated over 100-fold, compared to roughly threefold for the Nasdaq over the same period. The company also required a two-year hold before employees could sell, which meant the October 2025 tender was the first time many workers who joined after ChatGPT launched could touch their money.
No other tech boom has lavished this magnitude of wealth on such a wide slice of employees before a public listing. Meta offered $300 million pay packages to some top researchers in 2025, but those were retention plays for specific individuals. OpenAI's secondary was a broader wealth distribution event, and the cap was raised twice to meet investor demand, eventually reaching $30 million per employee.
The numbers attract attention. The angle that matters is what those numbers are producing.
The evidence that this talent dispersal is reshaping AI development at scale is visible in documented career patterns. Dario and Daniela Amodei left OpenAI in 2021 to form Anthropic, explicitly framing the new company around AI safety in ways that distinguished it from OpenAI's increasingly aggressive capability push. John Schulman, an OpenAI co-founder, followed them in 2024, saying he wanted to build "safe AGI." The result is Anthropic, now valued at $380 billion, as a direct rival to OpenAI on the basis of a philosophy articulated from within OpenAI's own culture. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's longtime chief scientist, left in 2024 to found Safe Superintelligence, a company with one stated product: a safe superintelligence. It has no revenue, no product, and a $32 billion valuation. Investors are buying the worldview.
These are the extreme cases. The more common pattern is lower-profile but equally significant. Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of ChatGPT and GPT-4 at OpenAI, departed for Meta's Superintelligence Lab in July 2025 and became its chief scientist, working directly with Mark Zuckerberg. Jason Wei, a research scientist who worked on OpenAI's o1 model, left the same month for the same Meta lab. Hyung Won Chung, Jiahui Yu, Hongyu Ren, and Shuchao Bi followed within weeks, a coordinated exodus that Meta's AI unit has described as building "from a clean slate with a truly talent-dense team." The result is a Meta AI division whose publicly stated priorities mirror the safety-adjacent stance of researchers who chose to relocate there rather than stay at the world's most prominent AI lab.
Not all alumni moved toward safety. Kyle Kosic left OpenAI in 2023 to become infrastructure lead at xAI, Elon Musk's rival chatbot company, before returning to OpenAI in 2024. Aravind Srinivas founded Perplexity, an AI search engine that has raised $200 million at a $20 billion valuation, building in a direction shaped by his time at OpenAI but with a different product philosophy. Mira Murati founded Thinking Machines Lab after leaving her CTO role, positioning it around customization and fine-tuning rather than raw capability race.
The pattern, even accounting for its exceptions, points in a consistent direction. A TechCrunch analysis published in February 2026 identified 18 notable startups founded by OpenAI alumni, spanning AI safety, scientific discovery, enterprise automation, and education. The list was described as already outdated. Departing OpenAI employees raise venture capital at premium valuations because the credential carries weight, they hire other OpenAI alumni, and they build in directions shaped by their time inside the company. The credential is not merely a signal of technical competence. It appears, based on observable career patterns, to function as a proxy for a specific set of assumptions about scale, safety, and the trajectory of capability advancement that does not map neatly onto how most technology companies think about their products.
Some of the 75 employees who maxed out at $30 million chose to put remaining shares into donor-advised funds, charitable investment accounts that offer tax deductions while capital continues growing. That choice, expressed in financial behavior, reflects the same risk tolerance that made them comfortable joining an unconventional nonprofit-cum-corporation in the first place.
OpenAI is preparing for what will likely be among the largest IPOs in history. Anthropic is on a similar trajectory. When those public offerings arrive, the floodgates open again, this time with a wider aperture. The rank-and-file workers who have been waiting years to sell will finally get their moment. The $6.6 billion October tender was a preview. The main event has not happened yet.
The question worth asking is not whether the money is real. It is. The question is what ideas and assumptions travel with it, and whether the economy that absorbs these newly wealthy former employees shapes them, or they shape it.
The first generation of OpenAI employees is cashing out. The second generation is still inside. Both groups are making choices that will determine which version of AI scales.
