By late 2025, Anthropic had less than $9 billion in annualized revenue, per Epoch AI's analysis of the lab's disclosures. That same year, Anthropic announced $50 billion in spending on American AI infrastructure. The gap is the story, and the resolution is structural: nearly all of that $50 billion is debt, and the risk is sitting on chip and datacenter suppliers rather than on the lab itself.
The shape of the deal comes in two large pieces. The first is the TPU tranche. Per Epoch AI's reading of Anthropic's November 2025 infrastructure announcement, the lab assembled roughly $35 billion in debt to purchase more than one gigawatt of Tensor Processing Units from Google. The loans are serviced by future payments Anthropic owes Google for the chips, and Apollo led the syndication of that debt. The unusual part is the backstop: per Anthropic's Google–Broadcom partnership disclosure, Broadcom conditionally covers the lenders if Anthropic stops paying. A frontier lab's compute bill is being underwritten, in effect, by the chip ecosystem that supplies the chips.
The second piece is the Fluidstack tranche, again per Epoch AI. Five lenders issued roughly $15.2 billion of loans to build out 1.43 gigawatts of critical IT capacity at five Fluidstack data centers, and Google conditionally supports those lenders if Fluidstack stops paying rent. The risk migration is the same pattern: the customer (Anthropic) is one step removed from the lender, and a deeper-pocketed counterparty absorbs the tail.
Most of this financing was assembled in early 2026, before Anthropic's revenue spike. That timing is what makes the case study useful. Lenders were pricing AI compute against a future-revenue thesis at a moment when Anthropic's actual top line was a small fraction of what it was committing to spend. Epoch AI's read on that sequence is that financing is unlikely to be the immediate bottleneck on frontier compute growth, because the structure has shifted the credit risk from the lab to better-capitalized suppliers and backers. Capital is finding its way in.
Broadcom's 10-Q for the quarter ending May 3, 2026 surfaces the AI-financing exposure that the backstop creates, and on August 11, 2026, a Broadcom debt-outlook cut cited AI financing risk as a driver. The architecture Epoch AI describes is not hypothetical stress; it is already showing up in the credit metrics of the companies absorbing the risk.
What that means for the rest of the AI buildout is that the binding constraint has moved. Money is no longer the hard part; chips, power, and the datacenter shells are. If any of those slip, the contingent guarantees stack up: a Fluidstack rent default pulls on Google, a TPU payment default pulls on Broadcom, and the cost of the next tranche of debt reflects how the last one performed. The $50 billion figure is the visible total. The next batch of 10-Qs from Broadcom and Google's datacenter partners will show whether the suppliers behind the structure can keep writing checks against a frontier lab's promise.
